Ukokkei Ramen Ron ♥ ♥

IMG_9473

Now I am seriously convinced that life is unfair.

Just look at the eating patterns of these four friends.

1. JEREMY – The heaviest (sorry, Jerms!)
    Profile: Male, 5’8”, 2xx lbs.
Activities: Playing badminton, 2-3 times a week

IMG_9479Ukokkei Shoyu Chashu

Jeremy orders this ramen in soy sauce-based soup with pork slices, healthy bamboo shoots and a sprinkling of green onions. The broth is light and clear, tastes very clean with just a teeny weeny bit of oil. Light and healthy.

2. JIN – The 2nd heaviest (oh earth, please swallow me now)
    Profile: Female, 5’4”, 153 lbs.
Activities: Running on the treadmill, 30 minutes, every single day

IMG_9484Ukokkei Miso Chashu

I order this ramen in miso-based soup with pork slices, bean sprouts and generous sprinkling of chopped green onions. This tastes nothing like conventional miso. Now don’t get me wrong, the soup is rich and flavorful and amazing, and tastes like it’s really been simmered for days. It’s just a bit too oily for me.

But first, let us talk about the Ukokkei noodles. They should be al dente, but tonight they’re soggy. I prefer more bite to my ramen, like the Italian al dente or the Taiwanese “Q” or the “pour boiling water into the instant noodle cup and wait 3 minutes” effect.

3. CHIP – The 2nd lightest (For the record, I am lighter, he’s just taller!)
    Profile: Male, 5’10”, 160 lbs.
Activities: Going to the office, traveling, watching Modern Family, etc. etc.

4. MICHELLE – The lightest of all
    Profile: Female, 5’2”, 105 lbs.
Activities: Shopping, playing with the kids, going to the salon for mani-pedi, etc. etc.

IMG_9488Ukokkei Negi Miso

Now take my oily Miso Chashu and add 3 levels of spiciness into it (with chili oil, no less), then top with a huge lump of green onion ribbons. This bowl of ramen is super robust, super tasty, and super oily, with the spiciness bringing the flavors to all new heights. If you think my Miso Chashu is oily, think again. This is the oiliest of them all, but it is also the most delicious of them all. Next time I shall order this.

IMG_9489Chip finishes this extra order of chashu, too!

See? It’s no fair.

With our arteries already lined with a thick film of oil, we go to Tian Di for drinks to abuse the bodies more.

IMG_9496Me, Chip, Michelle, Jeremy

Okay, fine. I lied.

Michelle is a hardcore runner who trains religiously, and participates in all of Manila’s running events. This woman even travels across the globe to join other countries’ runs. And Chip, Michelle’s husband, well, aside from his regular badminton games, Chip runs, too... After his wife! Hehehe :)

Okay, fine. I lied again.

Aside from his Shoyu Chashu and my Miso Chashu, Jeremy and I share an order of gyoza and fried chicken, which are both just okay.

IMG_9491Yaki Gyoza – too oily and too many burnt pieces stuck on the dumplings’ butts

IMG_9494Chicken Karaage – blah

As for me running on the treadmill 30 minutes every single day…

Pure BS.

Oreo Cheesecake ♥ ♥ ♥

I have a confession. I am a sucker for promos.
“Buy one, take one!”
“Buy two and get the 3rd item free!!!”
“Buy one pack, get 50% off on the 2nd pack” (thus, my sprawling and still-growing collection of Marks & Spencer panties)

Today at the grocery, I see this:
NABISCO OREO WHITE CREAM SANDWICHES (TRAY)
264.6g
Before: HK$19.90
NOW: $13.90

IMG_7039

Oh, help me, sweet Jesus!

I. Just. Could. Not. Resist.

So I buy 2 trays, one original and the other with chocolate creme filling. After all, twelve dollars saved IS twelve dollars earned.

I decide to reward my smartness with an Oreo Cheesecake. (Light bulb!)

So I use my HK$12 earnings to buy three blocks of Philadelphia Cream Cheese at HK$29.90 each.

Go figure.

IMG_7046I break the Oreo cookies into small pieces and try not to “accidentally” drop too many of them into my mouth

IMG_7056I then gather enough broken Oreo pieces to make a crust. I think of all the skinny people who do not gain a pound even though they eat twice as much as I do. Of how painful it is to always be on some diet, how much time I spend working out and getting no results. I think of how unfair life is, then I start pounding. Pounding until I get fine powdery Oreos, then I add just enough melted butter to moisten the crumbs and I press this mixture into a loose-bottom pan and bake it for 600 seconds.

IMG_7061 When cream cheese is soft, I add a few drops of vanilla, 3 eggs, some flour, and a fair amount of condensed milk, then I whip and scrape, whip and scrape. Then I throw in all the remaining Oreo pieces still not in my tummy, and then almost as immediately, I retrieve about 5 pieces of it. Oreo pieces covered in cream cheese batter, they're the bomb!

IMG_7070 I pour the batter into the baking pan and into a few cupcake liners, bake them for 15 minutes at 425°F, turn the heat down to 325°F and bake for another 40 or so. I watch some TV, kill some zombies, stalk people on facebook, throw angry birds at green pigs…

IMG_7089The cupcakes take less time to cook so I take them out of the oven midway through and immediately bite into one. Ouch!!! I think it burned my tongue. But mmm… this is good stuff!

IMG_7098Yikes! I overbaked the cake! Blame it on Jamie Oliver and his very cute lisp.

IMG_7105 Thankfully, the inside is soft, moist and creamy

IMG_7115 I cut the cake into bite-size cubes to bring to the office next day, believing that smaller pieces mean lesser chance my boss will catch me stuffing my face at work again.

IMG_9449 My Oreo sheets. Hehe... just sharing…  :)

Pearl Vietnamese Restaurant 明珠越南餐廳 ♥

After our 2-hour make up lesson at the Chanel Workshop (yes, I needed the crash course desperately), Shirley and I, all glammed up with layers and layers and layers of softening lotion, moisturizer, primer, foundation, concealer, loose powder, highlighter, eyeshadow base, eyeliner, eyeshadow, mascara, blush, bronzer, lip primer, lip liner and lipstick (Whoa!!! Do we really need ALL THAT?!?), we go up to Lan Kwai Fong, proud to show off our newly acquired faces.

No, not to the hip and happening bars that line the LFK streets, but to this small dingy Vietnamese joint called Pearl, where, according to Matthew, the best fried rice in Hong Kong can be found.

Yup, we’re showing off our made up faces to Hong Kong’s best fried rice!

IMG_0715Shrimp and pork roll 蝦仁豬肉卷 – filled to the brim with fresh veggies, vermicelli, pork and shrimps. Rice paper wrapper could be thinner and softer. Must dip this in The Special Sauce.

IMG_0708Fried spring roll 炸春卷 – let us try not to think about how much oil has gone into frying these rolls, because these are such tasty treats that worrying about cholesterol at this sacred moment is one of the greatest sins you will ever commit. Must dip these in The Special Sauce.

IMG_0706 Vietnamese pork cube 蒸粉卷 – our attempt to make peace with our health after ordering another serving of the fried spring rolls. This tastes pretty decent although the skin could be a little less thick. Must pour The Special Sauce all over this.

IMG_0720Deep fried frog legs 炸田雞 – like fried chicken with many a fractured bone. Must dip the severely fractured chicken in The Special Sauce.

IMG_0713Beef with cold vermicelli 牛柳粒凍檬 – nothing great. Must pour The Special Sauce all over this.

IMG_0711Seafood and pork noodle soup 扎肉蝦湯河 – Shirley’s favorite. No need to pour The Special Sauce into this one. (But if you want, of course you may)

IMG_0717Pearl fried rice 明珠炒飯 – STOP!!! Do NOT pour The Special Sauce on this one! Okay, so this is not exactly THE best fried rice in all of Hong Kong, methinks, but I’d say it’s right up there.

Now it’s time to talk about The Special Sauce.

You see that small red pitcher in the middle of our table? (You have to scroll down first, dumdum!) That sweet-tangy-little-spicy sauce is magic. Pour it on anything and anything instantly tastes a gazillion times better. It is, I would say, the flavor of Vietnam.
