Sydney Favorites ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Looking at my calendar last January, I realized I had one whole week of free time - no important meetings, no commitments, no dinners planned. I decided to take off for some much-needed me time. My destination was an easy choice. I looked up San Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants blog for Laura Price’s article on the five foodie cities to visit in 2016 and picked one from the list. I had already been to Seoul and San Sebastian. Chile and Mexico would require more than seven days. Sydney was perfect.

I flew Philippine Airlines, which had the best schedules. I left Manila at 10:05 in the evening, slept like a baby on the plane and arrived Sydney 9:30 the next morning, refreshed and ready to eat my way through the city. On my last day, after a quick breakfast, I took the 11:15am flight out and arrived home at 4:30pm, with enough time to unpack, decompress and get myself ready for work the following day.

PAL's very spacious cabin with fully reclinable seats. I slept like a baby!

Food was delicious on both flights. My favorite was this gambas al ajillo on quinoa salad
by Chef Fernando Aracama

I ate so much in Sydney. It was my first time in the capital of New South Wales and my goal was to try everything I could get my hands on. And I succeeded.

Sharing with you my favorite gastronomic experiences:

SYDNEY FISH MARKET

This place is paradise for all seafood lovers. The freshest lobsters, shrimps, oysters, scallops, salmon, ocean trout, yellowfin tuna, swimmer crabs, abalone… you name it, they’ve got it! There were many suppliers at the market but I bought everything from Peter’s which had the most attractive selection. I enjoyed my lunch of a dozen freshly shucked oysters, three jumbo scampi sashimi and scallop aburi al fresco, overlooking the calm waters while I shooed away seagulls that were waiting to attack my food. Bring wet tissue.

Seafood galore! You name it, they've got it!

SEPIA

Each course was so exquisitely presented I hesitated a little before digging into my plate. Sepia is the perfect date place, wines were lovely and service excellent. The most unforgettable dishes were the rolled sake jelly stuffed with crabmeat in a brown butter emulsion, the roasted Aylesbury duck breast served with sheep yogurt and boysenberry vinegar, and the excruciatingly tender Blackmore wagyu karubi in miso mustard, Japanese pickles and pea shoots.

Seared scampi, smoked bone marrow, cauliflower, yuzu koshu,  toasted milk bread,
citrus soy, sobacha

LuMi BAR AND DINING RESTAURANT

Open kitchen to your right, the wharf to your left, and a thousand light bulbs shining above you like twinkling stars. It was such a romantic setting for a degustation dinner where Italian and Japanese flavors blend beautifully in every course. The beetroot covered in black sesame cream was phenomenal, as was the lamb rib grilled in red miso that I devoured hungrily with my bare hands.

ROCKPOOL BAR AND GRILL

I came here for a late dinner of Blackmore full-blood wagyu burger which was outstandingly orchestrated. The patty was thick, chunky and juicy, topped with peppery onions, zuni pickles, bacon, cheese, and sandwiched between a toasted brioche bun. The bar design was truly magnificent I ordered a smoked peanut old fashion so I could stay longer to stare at the 6,500 Riedel wine glasses suspended in air.

BLACK STAR PASTRY

What can I say that has not already been said? The iconic watermelon cake lived up to all the hype and was the most special dessert I ate this trip. Layers of almond dacquoise, whipped cream, watermelon, strawberries, rose cream, topped with a generous sprinkling of pistachios and rose petals. Tasted as pretty as it looked.

GELATO MESSINA

So many interesting flavors like apple pie, banana split, coconut & lychee, white chocolate hazelnut, pear & rhubarb, poached figs in marsala, panna cotta with fig jam and amaretti biscuit, yogurt & berry, and the list goes on. I sampled so many and finally settled on milk chocolate peanut butter fudge. So rich and decadent, so worth the sore throat.

GUMPTION COFFEE BY COFFEE ALCHEMY

A bustling little café with fantastic coffee and in such a beautiful setting, too. I came here almost everyday and my piccolo latte was always consistently good, smooth and strong. One of the things I miss most about Sydney.

BOURKE STREET BAKERY

Everything in this Sydney institution is hearty, comforting, full of love - the lamb almond harrisa sausage roll, beef brisket red wine mushroom pie, and almond croissant. The ginger creme brulee tart is like nothing I’ve ever had before and must not be missed.

HAIGH'S CHOCOLATES

One stop shop for pasalubong hunting. You can find all shapes and sizes of chocolates, almond and macadamia nougats, and my favorite discovery - orange slices covered in dark chocolate. Addicting stuff!

Qatar Airways Manila-Doha-Madrid ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Many of you have been requesting (some even demanding!) me to share my Spain trip here on the blog. Well, good news! I am finally doing it... after 6 months. Hahaha! Thank you so much for your unwavering patience! :P

As most of you know, this blog is really an online diary for me rather than a food and restaurant review site. I write about my meals with family and friends, my travels, random thoughts and musings, meals at home, new discoveries, things I love, things I believe most of you will also love, funnies, and really just anything under the sun. I may or may not go into detail, I may jump from one city to another, from last week's event to two years ago, depending on the mood I'm in. Please bear with me.

I will try my best to do the Spain posts as chronologically as possible, starting with the plane ride. Because every trip begins with getting on the aircraft, and because I love inflight meals.

It was my first time to fly Qatar Airways and I absolutely loved the experience.

Seats were wide enough and bottled water was within reach

Compartments to store your things. It was perfect for my phone, camera, and little snacks.

May be trivial, but I like the colors on the screen :)

Toiletries by Giorgio Armani and Rituals

 Ample leg room

The menu is a la carte, meaning you can order any or all of the above
and have them any time you want during the flight

Lighter options available, too

 Amuse bouche

Bread and butter

Pimiento and roasted artichoke cream soup with mushrooms and asparagus

Braised lamb with herbed potato, cherry tomatoes, beetroot, asparagus, and tomato oil

 Cheese platter

Seasonal fresh fruits and Godiva chocolates

Well, the very attentive and generous flight attendant said I could have as many as I wanted! Lol!

While enjoying my chocolates, I watched a show featuring top Barcelona restaurants

Seafood paella at Set Portes, which was included in my eat-inerary. Yay.

Tickets!!! One of the very first restaurants I booked for the trip.
This got me more and more excited, I had to force myself to sleep to contain my emotions.

The chair reclines all the way and I was in dreamland in no time

 Hello, Doha International Airport!

The world-class airport left me quite impressed. I wouldn't mind long layovers here,
there is something to keep everyone busy

Bought these yummy dates to munch on during the next leg of the flight

After exploring the rest of the airport, I only had a little time left before boarding so I decided to wait for my return flight to check out the bigger business lounge. It was amazing, by the way. Wait for that post!

I went instead to the smaller lounge

Which was still bigger than many of the lounges we have in NAIA

It was full house but everything was orderly

Food trays were always quickly replenished. A service staff was actually waiting for
me to finish taking this photo so he could refill the empty spots.

Everything in this area was so delicious!!!

I know because I took a little of everything

And went back for seconds!

The most photographed subject in Doha Airport is this $6.8-million teddy bear installation by
Urs Fischer. It used to be displayed in front of Seagram Building on Park Avenue in New York
until the sculpture was bought at an auction by a member of Qatar's royal family.

I decided to sleep more and go easy on food during the flight from Doha to Madrid.

Mushroom and rice fritter with chili and garlic sauce

Bircher muesli

Laduree Vendome, a chocolate and blackberry tea mousse on dark chocolate biscuit
with blackberry confit. Who says you can't have excellent desserts in the plane?

Before landing, a last hurrah of chicken and potato rosti with sambhar, wilted spinach,
baby corn, and coriander creme fraiche

Hello, Madrid!!!

Obviously, I had gained a few pounds already even before I reached my destination.

And I am happy to announce that Qatar Airways is my new favorite airlines!
