Shanghai Uncle ♥ ♥ ♥

For our last meal in Shanghai, we decided to eat just around the corner from our hotel before we head to the airport.

Shanghai Uncle serves modern Shanghainese fare. The place is big, clean, has floral red chairs...

And a big screen tv featuring different Shanghainese delicacies

I usually do not like it when they mess with the traditional, but this Uncle did it really well. I find myself enjoying the creative twists he made to classic Shanghainese staples.

Everything we ordered was delicious.

versions I've tried this trip

And then it was time for REAL desserts.

For me that always means CHOCOLATES!!!

The Dessert Display. I chose two of the darkest, richest, chocolatiest cakes.
Frances, the boring one, went for cheesecake. Zzzzzzzzzzz…

DSC04510

Walnut Fudge Brownie - HOMAYGAD!!! This is my chocolate dream come true!
Moist, fudgy and extremely chocolatey. It's a bit sweet, too, but there's whipped cream
to balance everything out. And I just love whipped cream. The perfect indulgence for me!

Orange Chocolate Mud Cake - House of Flour's signature cake is incredibly moist, dense,
spiked with orange fragrance, slathered with caramel, topped with orange confit
and sprinkled with sea salt. There is nothing not to like about it.

DSC04513

Marble Cheesecake - okay, this is good, too, but still it's not chocolate

To go with my chocolate cakes, I had a cup of Michel Cluizel Hot Chocolate.
85% cocoa, bitter and intense.

Frances had the Italian Thick Hot Chocolate

Man, they weren't kidding when they said thick!

After our sad sad meal at Yong Shun He Suzhou Dumpling, I thought we deserved some amazing desserts.

DSC04490

Lian Lian Grass Jelly, a Taiwanese dessert shop, was the only place serving sweets

DSC04479

It was closed already, but the owner happily reopened the store to accommodate us

Everything was watered down. :((((((

I wish the owner weren't so nice and just shooed us away.

The plan was to restaurant hop starting from Yang's Dumpling (it's the best!) to Jia Jia Tang Bao (meh!) to other restaurants on Huanghe Lu.

But we came late and Jia Jia already closed for the night after our fried dumplings escapade at Yang's.

We saw this other soupy dumpling place further down the street and thought we'd give it a try.

Turned out to be the worst ever meal of our trip!

One basket each of Tang Bao (Soupy Dumpling), Crab Roe Tang Bao,
and Egg Yolk Tang Bao. None of them good.

The skin was thick, the filling mushy, and the soup bland and oily

It was a major dumpling fail

Someone looks very displeased! Yikes!

Yang's Dumpling 小杨生煎 ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

DSC04442

After Jesse, Yang's Dumpling is probably my most favorite restaurant in Shanghai

DSC04443

Look at those baby bottoms being pan-fried to a crisp

DSC04446

Ooohhh… Blond hair sightings! Lol! :P

A plate of sheng jian bao joy!

DSC04455

First, you nibble on the skin and inhale the porky steam

DSC04457

Then you bite off a chunk of that perfectly thin skin and drink up every last drop of the tasty juices

DSC04452

Now it's time to attack the glorious ball of meat. I use only my mouth and hands for the
ultimate experience. Incredibly good, insanely cheap!

We had dumplings and nothing else.

I suggest you do the same.

Best comfort food in Shanghai.
