Basilique Notre Dame de Fourvière

The Basilica Notre Dame de Fourviere was built in the 19th century as testament to the vast wealth and power of the Roman Catholic Church.

It has a gothic neo-Byzantine style and its Fourviere hilltop location offers magnificent views of the city.

You can either walk all the way up or be lazy BUT SMART like me and take the funicular :P

Short, comfortable ride vs. long, uphill walk. Take your pick.

As soon as you exit, this is what you see

The basilica has four main towers and a bell tower topped with a gilded statue of the Virgin Mary

What's most interesting is Fourviere actually contains two churches, one built on top of the other.
This is the church on top. It was undergoing renovations the time I went.

This is Father Gilles Sander. He came up and spoke to me in fluent Mandarin!

Father Sander told me Lyon has such a big Chinese Catholic community that
they started printing church materials in Chinese. The word means Love.
